Active at 60

Some people can face retirement with a range of anxieties about what lies ahead, and can become at risk of loneliness, social isolation and poor health in later life.

Active at 60 is a Government programme aiming to increase the activity of those nearing or newly retired both mentally and physically, and to encourage them to continue these activities into later life.

This programme is looking for ways to build on existing community provision to help older people find out about and get involved with activities that will help them stay active, healthy and independent. New ideas and projects are also welcome.

Projects should be volunteer led, and focus on bringing benefit to older people of retirement age, particularly those who are experiencing disadvantage or deprivation of any kind.

Grants available:
A total fund of £42,214 is available to community groups in Norfolk who are working with volunteers to create new ways of engaging older people.

Grants of £250 - £3,000 are available to support costs including:

  •     Equipment/ materials
  •     Travel costs
  •     Venue hire costs
  •     Costs of telephone, stationery, printer inks etc.
  •     Refreshments

Other costs may also be considered.

Please note: grants cannot be used to pay for advertising and marketing, or any promotional activity. This includes professional printing of flyers/ posters etc, professional web design, and events that are purely promotional. Applicants are encouraged to use parish newsletters, community websites, notice boards, word of mouth and other local networks to raise awareness of their projects.

What kind of projects could be funded
Projects should primarily benefit, or aim to include, people at or approaching retirement age and could involve:

  • Local groups joining together to give the members of each an opportunity to try something new, or visit a new place
  • A new piece of equipment that will enable an existing group to broaden the activities it offers
  • A village hall or group offering taster sessions
  • Funds to enable a group to increase the number of people it is able to benefit
  • Funds to start or continue activities that some people are not able to afford to pay for
  • A sports club offering taster sessions, or introducing regular classes
  • Befriending activities that offer social opportunities, and help people to connect with the wider community
  • Providing opportunities to volunteer

There are many other activities that may be eligible for funding.

Who can apply:
Norfolk based constituted community groups, registered charities and parochial church councils with an annual income of under £50,000 (average over 3 years) can apply. Each application should be able to name a volunteer (not paid staff member) who will act as a ‘Community Agent’ and help advocate for and deliver proposed projects.

Ideally the Community Agent should be in a similar age group to the target beneficiaries. This person can be an existing volunteer, although attracting new volunteers to help support this programme is encouraged. This can be an informal role, and can take as little or as much time as needed.

Exclusions:
Parish Councils and other statutory bodies are not eligible to apply for this grant. Applications can only be accepted from branches of national charities if they are separately constituted.

Political and commercial ventures will not be supported. Projects where plants or animals are the sole beneficiaries will not be considered. Purely virtual (for example, web-only services) are not eligible.
