Chooks and Bees Rescued

27 Jun 2011

Hello everyone at 96k Talkback Dawn here

On Sunday I went to The Little Hen Rescue Centre , a non profit making organization in Floddon just outside Norwich, and got myself 2 ex battery hens that have been rescued from the factory.  Each month, Jo Eglan, the owner, and about 30 volunteers rescue some 750 chickens from being slaughtered. Jo has been doing this for the last three years and says "they make wonderful pets and they also continue laying eggs" The chickens are cheap to feed, if you think you could rehome a hen go to http://littlehenrescue.co.uk/default.aspx

As we all know and keep hearing in the news we seem to have a smaller population of honey bees. They seem to be getting fewer and fewer each year, possibly due to farming methods and disease. I and my friend Marco, who shares a house with me in Gorleston, have joined a network for learning how to set up a beehive and so on.

As you can see from the pictures we have been putting a hive together, this will be ongoing for the next few months before we become profficient at looking after bees. I shall in due course make more pictures available and hopefully will be able to have a hive in our garden in Gorleston I will keep you posted, Dawn.
