THE BIG CONVERSATION
Norfolk County Council have opened a consultation period to get the views of the people of Norfolk about the cuts that will be coming in the near future.
96k believes that it is important that the people of Great Yarmouth get involved in this consultation now. As individuals we may feel that it is right to cut back on some things, benefit fraud being the obvious one. But ask yourselves where these cuts will stop, who will they affect. You may be surprised to find that they are closer to your door than you thought.
Just a few bullet points from the proposed 'savings' that NCC are putting forward
3000 jobs to go
2 year pay freeze
Parish and town councils to take on highways maintenance
Volunteers to take on community meals, youth activities, clean and clear footpaths, speeding traffic, schools and libraries
The biggest worry for 96k however is that NCC appears to be reducing or removing the funding for 'preventative' services. These are the services that help individuals in their lives before the problems they experience become critical. NCC says they intend to fund critical services. This cannot be cost effective. The people who lose services that are vital to them will inevitably then become critical thus becoming a greater burden to the tax payer - that's you and me.
Take a look at the document that NCC have put out, we will all know someone that will be affected by the cuts.
