Saturday night saw the culmination of weeks of hard work by event organisers and designers from the around the Great Yarmouth area.
96k Community Reporters reporting on the Essence of Elegance Community Fashion Show Event at the Kings Centre which was attended by family members and invited guests.
The show started with an introduction from the host for the night Rachel Benham
Then with accompanying music, the young designers strutted their stuff on the catwalk showing off their designs and costumes in a series of 4 collections.
During the event it was not hard to see the hard work and time that everyone had put into this event and it was great to see the confidence levels of these young women coming out on stage.
Well done to all invlovled in this great event

Chippo Chitakunye (24 years old):
I have always loved fashion, how it can define ME as a person. The course was an opportunity for me to learn the fundamental design skills in the hope of advancing my skills. This was an opportunity not to be missed. I so can’t wait to be on the roll and creating my own FASHION STATEMENT...watch da space!!!
Emma Hoddy (22 years old)
I’m Emma and I am the proud parent of Jessica (2 years old) and Kenzie (7 months). I heard of this project through GFS Platform and I wanted to get involved to help my self-confidence, as well as learning how to make clothes.
Heather Burcham (26 years old)
My main reason for joining this course was socialising and developing my confidence. As I suffer from Asperger’s Syndrome, this course has been a big challenge for me in many different ways. I have really enjoyed being a part of this project and have made some great new friends.
I don’t want to be defined by Asperger’s Syndrome and I feel it is important for other people to understand ways that people with Apserger’s naturally think and do things.
Nicola Spillane (22 years old)
I am a creative person who enjoys drawing and painting. I’m hoping to gain experience and confidence through this course which will help me to find a job.
This has been the first time that I’ve designed and made clothes and I’ve really enjoyed it. I will definitely be doing more of this kind of thing in the future.
I have a degree in Mathematics and I currently volunteer at the British Heart Foundation.
Rowan Woollard-Kingston (22 years old)
I have always enjoyed being creative with arts and crafts, and this project give me the opportunity to learn to be creative with clothes. Since starting the course, I have also started studying at Open University and hope that taking a range of courses will help me gain future employment in Great Yarmouth Borough.

This Fashion Show Course has been developed and delivered by Jankie D’s Community Workshops, working in partnership with other local Organisations, Artists and Practitioners. It is the culmination of thirty-three hours of session time, during which a group of local young people have learnt about design, clothes making, organising a fashion show and many other elements that have been embedded within the course.
An original aim of the course is to help participants to develop academic, making, and social skills to help their employability and future careers.
The course was ambitious from the outset and it has been a pleasure working with everybody involved. The Young Designers (participants) have risen to the challenge of creating of costumes under the following categories:
1) T-shirt Design
2) Deconstruct & Reconstruct
3) Costume from scratch
In addition to learning about clothes design and making, other learning subjects which the Young Designers have had an opportunity to learn about include:
