The group is a voluntary organisation dedicated to preserving, conserving and promoting the heritage of the town of Gorleston-on-Sea. We meet at the Kevill Arms on Church Road on Tuesday mornings at four-weekly intervals. The meetings, from 10am to noon, are friendly and informal, with everyone able to join in the discussions and activities.
G.O.S.H. holds exhibitions on the town’s heritage at local venues in the Borough; entrance is free and visitors are welcome. All G.O.S.H. members are invited to contribute to the exhibitions and assist with the organising of these events. Past exhibitions have included such diverse items as the Cockrill dynasty, local lifeboat history, Stradbrook School, the High Street, Pavilion Theatre, family research, the Gorleston Psalter, and the new Bandstand at Pier Gardens, the Cliff Top Gala, Maritime Festival, and St. Peter’s church hall, Gorleston.
The programme for 2009 commenced with an exhibition at the Kevill Arms in March, with the theme ‘Family and Fashions 1920 – 1940’, having a local emphasis. We took part in the Cliff Top Festival on Sunday 2nd August: at this event signatures were obtained on a petition for the re-opening of the car park on Gorleston Pier. Our final exhibition of the year was at St. Peter’s church hall, Lowestoft Road, on Thursday 8th October, where we were joined by the Model Boat Club, and Julie and Brian Grint of Acle who showed some of the items from Coopers shop on England’s Lane, which closed a few years ago.
