Today we went and interviewed probably two of the most well known people in the Newtown area of Great Yarmouth. The names Mr and Mrs Hatt might not ring many bells but as the lollipop man and lady of Alderman Swindell School and North Gate Saint Andrews School they are famous. Both in there 80s have worked just over the 21 years at Alderman Swindell School and 24 Years at North Gate Saint Andrews School and watched children grow up and in some case’s return with there own children. It was a teary interview for Mrs Hatt who informed us that she will miss all the children when they both retire on the 17th December at the end of this term, but Mrs Hatt hopes to return to Northgate Saint Andrews doing other things.
Mr Hat informed us that he only became a lollipop man after his wife had become one, because of a shortage of lollipop people in the area. I am to understand that both school will be holding a special assembly for each of there lollipop team members. Mr Hatt said “that he enjoyed the time with the school and he was very thankful of all the time he spent doing his job”
Mr’s Hatt celebrates her 84th birthday and Mr Hatt his 83rd birthday next year. Mr Hatt as crossed all my children over the road near Alderman Swindell School over the last 20 years and It will be very strange not to see him stood by the edge of the road talking to the children after the start of the new term in 2011.
They both carried on to say that they both had good lives and they are both very family orientated but feel at the age that they are, it would be difficult to carry on and there was other activities that they would like to carry out in the near future.
96ktalkback hopes to have reporters with Mr and Mrs Hatt on the 17th of December for there final day, we hope to see you there.
