Relay For Life Great Yarmouth A Great Success

05 Aug 2010

The event was held over the Saturday and Sunday of 24-25 July.
This was the third time this event was held at Caister School, organised by Stephen Bower, and his daughter Charlotte.

Cancer Research Relay for Life started in 1985 in Tacoma, Washington, USA by Dr. Gordon Klatt. It has now grown into the largest fundraising event in the world with over 3 million participants each year.
Chairman of the Gt Yarmouth Relay, Stephen Bower and his daughter, Charlotte, are the current organisers.

Stephen said after the July 2010 event…

"The Great Yarmouth Relay began 3 years ago with the aim of raising £10,000, encouraging Healthy Living and honouring Cancer Survivors, who are the VIP guests of honour. We actually raised £20,000, attracted more teams for year 2 when we raised £45,000, and more again for this year, with £32,000 currently raised, and more due.
We are up to 13 teams, each with 10 - 15 people in them. At least 1 person from each team must be walking round the track throughout the 20 hours of the event. They are kept going by entertainment, fellowship and fun.
The emotional part is at dusk when we light the candles around the track which are with dedications to those who lost the battle. After a poem and song, everyone takes part in a silent lap. It is a beautiful moment.
This is a community led event and is becoming, I hope, something that the general public recognise and will want to come and attend each year, to support the teams and join in."

After three hugely successful events Stephen is leaving the organising committee and a new organiser is being sought to continue the event.
