What are the aims of our Group?

We are an action group, trying to improve the quality of life for visually impaired people in our Borough of Great Yarmouth. We are achieving this through dialogue and discussion in a friendly atmosphere at our meetings. We regularly invite local speakers of interest e.g. Borough Council representatives, Town Centre Manager, local MP, PCT/NHS officers and Transport Organisations. As a visually impaired person (VIP) your views are very important and we need you to be involved, so please come along and find out what our group is all about. All VIP's, carers and other interested parties are very welcomed, to share their concerns, ideas and give support to each other.
We are aiming to build a web site which will offer to both individuals and professionals alike lots of information, support and exchange of stories.

When and Where do we meet?

We meet at Wherry Way Communal Room, Wherry Way, off Caister Road, Great Yarmouth NR30 4DG on the last Monday (except bank holidays when it’s brought forward one week) of every second month (January, March, May, July, September and November) at 2:00pm when Tea and Coffee is served. Our meeting starts at 2:30pm with our guest speaker and we finish at 4:30pm. Members are invited to donate £1 for our funds to help with expenses.

Our History and Projects

The group was formed in 1998 with the help of Making Sense supported by Norfolk Voluntary Services. Seven years ago the Making Sense project ended and since then we have been an independent group seeking our own funding. Some of our projects are, campaigning for yellow and black stripes on scaffolding, highlighting the dangers of shared surfaces, the A Boards (the white line down Regent Road), help design the GY PCT Web site, Campaigning both locally and nationally to support GDBA (Guide Dogs for the Blind) especially highways issues and RNIB including the higher rate DLA benefit and Right to Read Campaigns. We gave lots of advice for the GY InterGreat project. We are also a member of The Norfolk Coalition of Disabled People (NCoDP)
